The second graders have been studying China as part of our school-wide "Art Around the World" unit. They are so excited to finally be finished with their beautiful vases to display before the Chinese New Year. They are bringing a much needed sense of spring to our North Oakview hallways!

Art Inspired by ArtPrize 2014 Winner!
“Intersections,” by Anila Quayyum Agha
This post is long overdue but as I sat in my room this morning with the lights dimmed, I couldn't help but admire the students beautiful designs illuminated on the walls. We created these 3-D cube designs after our trip to the Grand Rapids Art Museum to visit ArtPrize. Students viewed “Intersections,” by Anila Quayyum Agha and then created their own inspired Art. A wonderful display on a cold winters day. =)

Rousseau Rain Forests
The 2nd graders have been studying Henri Rousseau for that last four weeks and yesterday we finally put the finishing touches on our rain forest collages. To help us remember all the things that we needed to include in our jungles, we used the National Gallery of Art's online jungle creation site. I promised the kids that I would link it here so that they could continue creating at home with permission of parents. You can even print out your designs! You can also check out our growing gallery of rain forest collages on Artsonia.

Poppy-The Flower of Remembrance
1st-4th graders are learning about the flower of remembrance and how the poppy is a symbol for Veteran's Day. North Oakview Elementary will be hosting a Veteran's Day assembly to celebrate and honor our Veterans on November 10. Artists will be giving handmade poppy flower pins to all those in attendance. We will have close to 300 ready to give and already have some beautiful work created!
