All of North Oakview celebrated Dot Day, based on the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds, during the week of September 15th. This day was to celebrate creativity, can-do attitudes, and give students the opportunity to "make their mark". Art classes created their own "stained glass" dots that are being made into chains to hang in the library.
But dot activities were happening all around the building, not just in the Art room. In the library, students learned more about the author Peter H. Reynolds and read another book called "Ish".
Students played dot-themed games and exercises in P.E.
There is even a Dot song that was learned in music class.
You can see our positive, can-do attitude activities all through the halls of North. What a great start to the year!

ArtPrize 2014
As an educator, I use ArtPrize in the classroom to start a conversation about "What is Art?" We talk about how Art is used as a form of communication, to express feelings/emotions, to provoke, to think about big ideas, and as an outlet for creativity. We also use Visual Thinking Strategies to talk about what Art means to us personally. There are no right or wrong answers as all students bring different background knowledge and experience to their viewing process. I emphasize that we are daily active decoders of visual language and constantly "reading" what artists create. ArtPrize is such an amazing local opportunity to use VTS and to be exposed to such a wide variety of Art. I challenge all of my elementary students to get out there, explore with their families, and ask the question "What is Art".

Art News
September - 2014
I am excited to
be teaching Art at North Oakview again this year! There are many fun lessons planned for your
student to be engaged in. Because
learning in Art class can be messy most days, please note which day of the week
your child will have art and try to avoid new/nice clothing that day of the
week. We will always wear Art smocks but it's good to be prepared for the day.
This
is what you can expect your child to be learning in Art this year:
The elementary visual arts program
enables students to see connections in the ever changing visual culture and how
that impacts their lives. Emphasis is
placed on the process of exploring a variety of subject, media, technique and
themes through studio activity, and discussion about works of art to develop
critical thinking, communication and visual literacy skills.
Kindergarten- Our students will:
●
develop independence
●
explore a variety of
art materials and use them safely and appropriately
●
improve fine motor
skills
●
explore the basic
elements of art: line, color, shape and texture
●
describe what is seen,
both literal and expressive, in selected works of art
●
look at and discuss art
from a variety of times and places
1st and 2nd Grade- Our students will:
●
demonstrate
independence
●
accept diversity in
art: historically, culturally and personally
●
apply prior skill
development
●
participate in
discussions about works of art: compare and contrast, communication of moods
and emotion
●
expand their
understanding of the elements and principles of design
●
explore universal
themes such as environment, community, human issues and communication
3rd and 4th Grade- Our students will:
●
know and apply the use
of tools, materials, techniques and processes of art
●
participate in
discussions about works of art: compare and contrast, analyze and interpret the
meaning of a work of art, communication of moods and emotion
●
use visual art
vocabulary when discussing art
●
explore universal
themes used by artists such as environment, community, human issues and
communication
●
apply problem solving
and divergent thinking skills in the creative process
●
recognize and
appreciate diversity in art
I also plan to
continue our participation on the art website Artsonia with which I photograph your student’s artwork and place
it online for friends and family to view. If you are new to this program, you
will be receiving a permission form to allow your child’s artwork to be shown
online soon. Our Artsonia website is

I am looking forward to another fun and successful
school year filled with wonderful artwork to create, share and enjoy together!

End of the Year
We had such a successful field day this year! Thank you to everyone who helped out and to all the students for being so creative as they stopped into the "Rockin' Art" station.
As we are winding down an awesome Art year, I want to encourage all my North artists to remember to keep practicing! Summer is the perfect time to get out a sketchpad and do some extra drawing. To help get some inspiration and motivation you can use this drawing challenge (or other similar Art challenges found on Pinterest).
Art class will soon be out for the summer, but it doesn't mean you can't still have some family Art fun. Festival of the Arts is a community celebration in downtown Grand Rapids, featuring arts, entertainment, food and fun activities for the entire family. North Oakview artists will be featured this year in the Youth Art Show that is located at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. You can visit the show festival weekend June 6-8 Friday 10:00am-8:00pm Saturday 10:00am-8:00pm Sunday Noon-3:00pm
Your family can also stop into the KDL Plainfield Library this summer to check out how North Oakview Elementary students used literature as inspiration for their Art! North artists will be featured over the break from May- August in the children's library section. The summer Art show is focused on "Summer Reading" and the work selected features Art inspired by children's literature.
